Today at Mobile World Congress, Rx Networks Inc., a leading mobile location technology company, in partnership with ST-Ericsson, a leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors, announced a successful integration of Rx Networks’ software and services for GLONASS, GPS, Wi-Fi®, and Cell-ID based positioning onto the ST-Ericsson NovaThor™ U8500 platform.

The NovaThor U8500 is the first integrated smartphone platform to offer the latest Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) dual core technology in a high-performance, low-power and cost-optimized solution for multiple operating systems. Starting next month, the U8500 will feature the CG2905 multi-function connectivity chip – announced today at Mobile World Congress – which adds GLONASS support to the 2900 series of GNSS, FM, and Bluetooth® combos.

Rx Networks has integrated its GPStream PGPS™ product with the ST-Ericsson CG2905, demonstrating times to first location fix of just a few seconds for the GLONASS and GPS constellations. In addition, the U8500 has been integrated with Rx Networks’ XYBRID RT™ service, adding Wi-Fi and Cell-ID based positioning capability that will simplify software integration and validation for customers using the NovaThor U8500 platform.

“The combination of the U8500 platform with GPStream PGPS and XYBRID RT makes for a very impressive user experience,” commented Adrian Stimpson, Sr. Vice-President, Sales & Marketing for Rx Networks. “With the CG2905’s addition of GLONASS support, the final handset or mobile device will be able to see a greater number of satellites in difficult conditions and environments like valleys and urban canyons, where sky visibility is limited. Add to this Wi-Fi and cellular positioning, and the user will get a fix every time, whether indoors or out.”

“Hybrid positioning techniques, which combine any available signals to determine location, are fast becoming the design of choice for smartphone manufacturers ,” said Nick Taluja, Head of Connectivity Marketing for ST-Ericsson. “As getting a fast and reliable location is an essential feature of today’s mobile devices, by working with Rx Networks the ST-Ericsson U8500 can now support hybrid positioning combining GPS, GLONASS, Cell-ID and Wi-Fi on a single platform.. Pre-integration of the Rx Networks’ PGPS and XYBRID RT on the U8500 will enable handset manufacturers to have a complete radio and location platform that can be designed into a smartphone in the shortest possible time.”
